From a Stressed Manager to a Balanced Leader

How Iulian shifted his behavior from paralyzing stress, indifference and stagnation to clarity, empathy and purposeful living

Iulian reached out to me after following my work on social media for a long time. And while he was determined to work with me and give coaching a try, he still had his reservations as to whether he could achieve change and improvement in the areas he needed it the most.

But because his desire and need for change was greater than his comfort of staying the same and having the same results, I decided to take him on as a client. I admired his honesty and readiness to make some serious changes in his life and career because even though he was an experienced professional in the finance field with a 15-year background he knew that to open up new opportunities for growth and progress, something needed to change.

And there we were digging deeper together session after session every week for approximately 18 months when Iulian concluded: “Tünde is one of the few people who managed to provide much more than I expected in our collaboration.”

Let me take you through how this happened. 😊

CHALLENGE

Even though Iulian was an experienced manager with a 15-year background in finance, he struggled in certain areas of his professional life. And even though things seemed fine from the outside, he couldn’t figure out the cause of his struggles and possible stagnation.

One of the greatest challenges he was facing were the need for clarity and having the courage to make hard decisions instead of postponing them and being in charge of his workload instead of the workload taking charge of him.

He also needed help understanding what was stopping him from taking action and making significant progress that would be aligned with his goals and values. He was noticing however the harmful effects of the high stress he was experiencing, continuous inner conflict and the negative reactions that would affect all areas of his life more or less.

SOLUTION

We know all too well that the higher you go in your profession, the greater the challenges can become, and the lonelier it gets when it comes to your struggles and growth even though surrounded by people. Therefore asking for objective, professional support to ensure personal and professional growth and development is a sign of strength in a manager, not weakness. It’s a sign of awareness of what your present situation is truly like and how it could improve. It’s a sign of having a vision and goals you want to fulfill, instead of just putting on a mask of ‘everything is fine’ until you collapse and your business with you.

Ignorance is never bliss, not when it comes to your life, marriage, business and relationships. And Iulian wasn’t ignorant, which led him to ask for my coaching services and we’ve worked every week in session for 18 months. We addressed all areas of his life: business/career, relationships, financial areas, health and self-care and anything that could affect his development and progress.

We also worked on developing 15 emotional intelligence skills and competencies that would support Iulian in effective communication, relationship development, independence and self-confidence, decision-making and stress management. And we also worked on understanding and learning how to develop and use these competencies in the right combination, in the right contexts and the right amount.

BENEFIT

As we dug deeper into the cause of Iulian’s struggles and challenges, and he became aware of the emotional implications and behavioral effects in his life and business, everything became clearer and made sense to him. As Iulian puts it: “I began to understand things at a new level and I gained such clarity that seemed unbelievable at first.”

And while it’s hard to believe such an achievement, unless you’ve experienced it yourself, it’s like you finally look in the mirror after many years and see things exactly as they are. You might like certain things about yourself and you might also realize what needs to be improved or completely changed.

And while it’s a much-needed and meaningful process, it is also something you can’t do on your own, because your blind spots will sabotage your clarity and objectivity. Therefore you need a safe environment and a trustworthy relationship based on confidentiality and psychological safety where you can be your true self to explore your inner self, improve, change and become your very best version. And the benefits of this were tremendous in Iulian’s life.

RESULTS

In our collaboration I worked with Iulian on 2 fronts: on one hand, we worked on the cause of the struggles, change, improvement, vision, and goals; on the other hand, we worked on developing the skills and competencies that would support the new change, improvement, progress, new opportunities, achievements and great results he wanted to achieve. Because it’s not enough to change the old habits, it’s important to develop new, good and healthy habits.

It’s important to note the fact that in order to achieve sustainable change and improvement, you also need specific skills and competencies that would serve as the right equipment in the right context. And having the right equipment for any type of situation you might be facing in your personal life or business, is like having a superpower. And the acquisition of such a ‘superpower’ or practical toolbox is the greatest result Iulian has achieved.

Now, Iulian makes better decisions without delaying any important decisions, his stress levels improved substantially, he understands what stopped him from taking consistent action and what goals he truly wants to achieve and he has a clearer direction and vision for the future.

He also communicates more effectively by expressing himself more congruently and is able to identify when his emotions get the best of him. And this has had a huge impact on all of his relationships, team and overall influence as a leader.

And while he was a great manager when he contacted me, now he is also a great leader. This is the result and effect of healthy, consistent and purposeful change and development that simultaneously includes deep redefinition and continuous building and upgrading of skills and competencies.

And this is why I love my job, I get to see such meaningful shifts and progress in people’s lives, which to me is the greatest achievement a person can witness.

Tünde is one of the few people who managed to provide much more than I expected in our collaboration. And her well-defined character, clearly set values and principles, her extraordinary respect and understanding for each person, all complemented by a warm personality is inspiring. The fact that I didn't feel judged for a second for what I say and do, was a new experience for me and it completely changed my perspective.

Tünde’s ability to ask the right questions as well as her active listening (that still amazes me) were enough for me to discover my values and passions.
